Date/Time: Thursday, February 14, 2013 2:00 - 3:30 PM

To commemorate American Heart Month and Black History Month, the National Institutes of Health welcomes the new Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), Dr. Gary Gibbons as the featured speaker to kick-off the 2013 NIH Health Disparities Seminar series.

CDC statistics show that African Americans are 30% more likely to die from heart disease and 40% more likely to have high blood pressure than white Americans. Emerging data suggests that genomic variation and other factors influencing genetic behavior can enhance individual susceptibility to heart disease, especially in minority populations. In his presentation, Dr. Gibbons will discuss the NHLBI's efforts to improve and impact public health through scientific excellence and diversity.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Gary H. Gibbons oversees the third largest institute at the NIH, with an annual budget of more than $3 billion. Prior to being named director of the NHLBI, Gibbons served as a member of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Advisory Council. Before joining the NHLBI, Gibbons served as the founding director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute, chairperson of the Department of Physiology, and professor of physiology and medicine at the Morehouse School of Medicine, in Atlanta.

Under his leadership of the Cardiovascular Research Institute, Gibbons directed NIH-funded research in the fields of vascular biology, genomic medicine, and the pathogenesis of vascular diseases. During his tenure, the Cardiovascular Research Institute emerged as a center of excellence, leading the way in discoveries related to the cardiovascular health of minority populations. Gibbons received several patents for innovations derived from his research in the fields of vascular biology and the pathogenesis of vascular diseases.
